Summer Science Projects: Blinky Lights Project

Summer Science Projects: Blinky Lights Project

This easy project will teach your student about simple circuits and how they work….add some pipe cleaners and there’s no telling what creatures they will come up with!

Supplies

  • 1 Fast LED
  • 1 Slow LED
  • 1 Coin Cell Battery
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Masking Tape

A simple electrical circuit has a power source, a complete path for electrons to flow, and a resistive load.

simple circuit

Place one side of the LED on each side of the battery.  Does it light up?  If not, switch sides.  The long “leg” (anode-positive) and the short leg (cathode-negative) only work one way on the battery.  Let students experiment to find out which way works.  Use masking tape to attach the LEDs to the battery, and add pipe cleaners to create something fun!
