Rico says: “Here’s a favorite of mine before we went to online school due to the ebola scare. The start of school was delayed by 10 days. We commenced on a Tuesday, had school Wednesday, then we were told around 9am we would go online for the next 6 weeks. The kids and I are showing our frustration with a 2nd closing of school. It turned out to be only 3 weeks. Oy!”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

How does a teacher in a rural US school end up in an International School in Thailand? What is it like to feel the blast of a terrorist bombing? How does a teacher navigate learning during an Ebola Crisis in Nigeria?<\/p>\n

It’s springtime in the high desert, and I’m starting to get spring fever. For me, spring fever almost always compels me to a road trip. I think that traveling and seeing new places, stimulates the brain in ways that few other activities can. In fact, one of my favorite quotes about traveling is from T. S. Elliot:<\/p>\n

“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”<\/p>\n

Road trips also get me to thinking about our Inventor’s Bootcamps, because we always manage to work a road trip into our plans. I love our Inventor’s Bootcamps because students learn so much and see so many new sights. The students build crazy engineering contraptions with 3D printers, wire them up with a little electronic trickery, and program them to do amazing feats. The creativity, confidence, curiosity, and deep thinking of the students in these summer camps is almost unbelievable.<\/p>\n

After beginning his\u00a0career at a tiny rural school house, Rico moved overseas to teach in Thailand. He believes these new experiences have helped him\u00a0grow as a person as well as a teacher. He’s\u00a0spent a total of 22 days teaching online due to having lived under unstable governments for the past 8 years. Technology has played an integral part in his\u00a0teaching during this time.<\/p>\n
