Scientific Sunday: Flying Turbines

Wind Turbine animatedWhen I saw the article claiming flying wind turbines I just had to look. How do they stay aloft? Why would you want to use these? Where is the best place to use them? These are all questions I had when I looked at this article posted below. These turbine have four main parts: the shell that keeps it floating and is filled with helium, the turbine that generates power, the tethers for connecting it to the ground, and the ground station that powers generation and wind speed. These balloons can withstand storms with winds up to 100 mph or they can be pulled down in more extreme weather. Who would have thought to optimize space by making power generators in the air?

I am currently a high school student interested in physics and engineering. One of my favorite things to do is building machines in Minecraft, since I am not very artistic, so most of my inventions take function over form.
